Future Vader

I have recently completed a design development project based on the designer Martin Margiela, the brief required me to design a capsule collection for the brand. After weeks of research into the designer as well as the customer and trends I concluded that Future Vader would be an appropriate title for the mood board. This is based on research into trends named 'Dark Vader' and 'Future Nature' both were in keeping with the designers erie space age designs, resulting in a combination of the two themes in my mood board.

I then went on to design a collection using the mood board and research into the intended customer and brand as stimulus for design. I think the end collection ties in well with the initial concepts used within the mood board and may be suitable for a Margiela collection.

Couture Renaissance

The images below are taken from a dress construction project, the brief required me to design and make a textiles product inspired by the spring/summer collection of a named fashion designer. The product should take elements of the designer’s signature style, but should be completely individual and creative. Carefully considering colour fabric styling features, components and surface decoration to design a garment suitable for a special occasion.

I also had to incorporate elements of salvaged or vintage fabrics and components into my design to achieve the sustainable design award. To achieve this I used salvaged organza from a warehouse to be used for the under layers of my garment.

This is a pair of men's casual jean style trousers I constructed in my first year of fashion at university, I found that the construction of menswear to womenswear is distinctively different, alternate rules apply for the placement of design features such as the fly piece which should open to the right opposed to the left in womenswear. Also features such as pockets should be carefully considered to the fit of a man’s hand, in womenswear these features are more likely to be in place for aesthetic purposes rather than functional..

However in womenswear the use of darts and seams are heavily focused upon to contour the garment to the body, for example in this skirt the use of seams and pleats running through the front and back of the garment plays a vital role to its fit of the body, the pleats allow for movement and the seams running up from the pleats taper the skirt in.

This tartan skirt shows how pleats can be used to create flare in a skirt, to create the pleats I decided upon an individual pleat width and then cut a rectangular strip of fabric which would be large enough to account for the fabric to fold back on its self to create a pleat. I then pinned the pleats in place along the strip and sewed an attaching line to hold the pleats in place. I then topstitched down the pleat lengths to secure the pleat.

There is also an additional under layer of net which I gathered by sewing a line of stitch with a large stitch length, I then pulled one of the end threads to create the gathers. This under layer is a design feature although it also helps to add volume to the garment.
